AI decision-making is everywhere right now. Credit approvals, insurance underwriting, telecom onboarding, rental applications, loyalty programs—if it involves volume and rules, someone has suggested “just use AI.”

On paper, it sounds brilliant: faster decisions, consistent outcomes, lower operational costs, fewer humans in the loop. In reality—especially in Canada—automating customer application decisions with AI introduces a stack of risks that organizations often underestimate until a complaint, audit, or regulator shows up asking uncomfortable questions.
And “the model did it” is not an acceptable answer.
Why AI decision-making is tempting—and dangerous

- Clear decision categories with auditable thresholds
- Data minimization tied to documented purposes
- Bias testing before launch and continuous monitoring after

- Clear rollback and incident response plans
Most importantly, they treat AI decisions as governed business processes—not technical experiments.

AI can absolutely improve customer application processing. But it can also scale mistakes faster than any human team ever could.
